The Red Fox is very common in suburban areas. The red fox is related to dogs, wolves, and coyotes. They are usually about 7-14 pounds and around 3' long, not including the tail. The fur of the Red Fox is usually reddish-orange and they can be identified by the white tip on their tail. As one of the larger members in the fox species, they prey on other small mammals. Rodents are their preferred food; especially animals such as squirrels, chipmunks, mice, rats or rabbits. They are helpful controlling the rodent population in the wild, however, they will prey on small animals including house cats and small dogs.
The Red Fox can live under structures close to homes, such as decks, sheds or barns. There are preventative measure can be taken to deter the fox from making a den near your home. You can eliminate and block access to crawl spaces under decks, sheds, and barns. They typically don't bother humans unless they have rabies and then they might be a bit aggressive.
